LIVING ON THE EDGE OF THE WILD:
PROTECTING OUR ROSSMOOR COMMUNITY AND OUR PETS
One of the most special things about living in Rossmoor is our unique setting. Rossmoor Walnut Creek encompasses approximately 1,800 acres, of which about 700 acres of preserved open space, including hillsides, wildlife habitat, parks, and trails that function almost like a private nature conservancy.
But while sharing a border with these open spaces is a privilege, it also means we are far more exposed to nature’s elements than the average neighborhood.
In our unique setting, we live side-by-side with a bustling ecosystem of critters. And while we watch out for the larger wildlife, it is often the smallest pests that pose the greatest risk. Globally, the humble mosquito is the number one killer of humans due to the diseases it spreads. Right here in our local hills, these pests—along with ticks, rodents, snakes and stinging insects—pose a dual front of danger, threatening not only us HOOMANS but our beloved four-legged family members as well.
A UNIFIED DEFENSE FOR OUR UNIQUE NEIGHBORHOOD
To help us balance enjoying our beautiful wilderness with staying safe, we are hosting a special educational meeting in on Thursday July 23rdat 1PM. We have brought together two essential experts to address our specific environmental risks:
CONTRA COSTA COUNTY MOSQUITO and VECTOR CONTROL DISTRICT
Nola Woods (Public Affairs Director) will walk us through their active public health services that address the exact pests we encounter daily: mosquitoes, rats, mice, skunks, underground yellow jackets, ticks, and biting insects. She will explain the services the District provides for these populations and how you can utilize their free services.
(Note: The District works to reduce the risk of insects and other animals that hurt us or make us sick... not the ones that drive us crazy like ants, spiders, cockroaches, or other pests found strictly inside or on home structures.)
Rossmoor Pet Hospital
We are very pleased to welcome Dr. Jimmy from our neighborhood's almost brand-new Rossmoor Pet Hospital which just opened their doors a few months ago. Dr. Jimmy will share essential precautions to protect our dogs and cats from the unique wilderness threats right outside our doors, including tick-borne illnesses, mosquito-borne heartworm, and encounters of local wildlife.
Come and learn how to safely navigate and enjoy our beautiful 1800-acre home, keeping every member of your household—two-legged and four-legged alike—protected.
